Mexican state plans dedicated Wellness Tourism Board as it combines local providers, international cooperation and specialised training into a new destination strategy
Yucatán is moving to establish a structured wellness tourism cluster that combines the Mexican state’s Mayan heritage, natural environment and traditional knowledge with contemporary health and wellbeing experiences.
The initiative is intended to position wellness as a distinct high-value tourism segment while creating new business opportunities for local providers, entrepreneurs and communities across the state.
The latest step in the strategy was the Summit Wellness 360° Mérida 2026, held from September 17 to 19. The event brought together tourism businesses, wellness specialists, academics and other industry representatives to develop a more distinctive wellness offering for Yucatán.
Mayan heritage becomes part of the wellness product
Rather than focusing exclusively on conventional spa and resort products, Yucatán wants to build its wellness identity around assets that distinguish the destination internationally.
Cenotes, forests and coastal landscapes are being combined with local gastronomy, traditional medicine, Mayan knowledge and community hospitality to create experiences centred on physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
The strategy builds on the state’s broader Maya Wellness initiative, which seeks to integrate traditional cultural knowledge and natural resources with contemporary wellness practices.
Tourism authorities see this combination as an opportunity both to diversify Yucatán’s tourism economy and to distribute tourism benefits beyond the state’s established visitor centres.
More than 80 providers join international wellness initiative
Industry participation is being expanded through a series of events and training programmes.
More than 80 tourism service providers from Yucatán are participating in the World Wellness Weekend from September 19 to 21.
This will be followed by an exchange with wellness and tourism providers from Antioquia in Colombia from September 21 to 24, creating an opportunity to share experience and develop international cooperation.
A specialised workshop on improving the wellness traveller experience is scheduled for September 28 and 29.
These activities form part of an effort to develop professional capabilities among local businesses while connecting government, private companies, communities, universities and wellness specialists.
Snowbirds become another target market
Yucatán is also looking at international long-stay visitors as a potential market for health and wellness services.
In November, the state plans to present its health, medical and wellness tourism offering as part of activities welcoming seasonal “snowbird” visitors to Progreso.
These travellers, particularly retirees escaping colder North American winters, represent a potentially attractive market for destinations combining longer stays with wellness, preventive health and medical services.
A bilingual presentation focusing on Yucatán as a destination for peaceful wellness experiences is also planned as part of a tourism observatory seminar.
Dedicated Wellness Tourism Board planned
The individual initiatives are intended to lead to a more permanent industry structure.
Yucatán plans to formalise a dedicated Wellness Tourism Board bringing together stakeholders involved in the development of the segment.
The next stage will include preparation of a cluster work plan for 2027, providing a framework for product development, training, cooperation and the positioning of the state in domestic and international markets.
The approach reflects a broader evolution in wellness tourism in which destinations increasingly seek to differentiate themselves through local culture, natural environments and traditional knowledge rather than relying solely on conventional spa services.
For Yucatán, that means turning its Mayan heritage and distinctive natural landscape into central elements of a coordinated wellness tourism strategy.
