Bahrain: M42 expands regional healthcare network with new specialist facility

Abu Dhabi-based healthcare group plans 20 medical specialties, advanced precision medicine services and around 200 jobs at its second facility in Bahrain

Abu Dhabi-based healthcare group M42 has announced plans to establish a new multidisciplinary medical facility in Bahrain, expanding its regional healthcare network through a partnership with local investors. The development, named Mubadala Health Bahrain, will be located in Bahrain Bay and offer specialised medical services alongside emerging technologies in precision medicine, genomics and longevity.

The project was announced during the Abu Dhabi Future Health Summit on 20 October 2026, where M42 signed a strategic agreement with Bahrain's Future Generations Reserve Fund (FGR) to secure premises for the facility. Developed through a joint venture between M42 and its Bahraini partner HealthVision, the centre will become the group's second healthcare facility in the kingdom.

The investment reflects growing cooperation between Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates in developing specialised healthcare infrastructure. While the facility is primarily intended to strengthen medical services for Bahrain's population, its broad clinical offering could also contribute to the country's longer-term attractiveness as a regional healthcare destination. No specific international patient recruitment strategy has been announced.

Twenty specialties and advanced medical technologies

Mubadala Health Bahrain is expected to provide services across 20 medical specialties, including six surgical inpatient specialties at launch.

The planned clinical portfolio includes cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, endocrinology, gynaecology, internal medicine, paediatrics, urology, general surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, neurology and ear, nose and throat care. Dentistry, plastic surgery and physiotherapy will also form part of the offering.

Beyond conventional specialist care, M42 intends to introduce services associated with precision medicine, genomics, artificial intelligence and longevity. These areas form part of the group's broader strategy of integrating advanced technologies into healthcare delivery.

The announcement does not specify which genomic or AI-supported applications will be available when the facility opens, nor does it provide details about the clinical scope of the planned longevity services.

Dimitris Moulavasilis, Group Chief Executive Officer of M42, described Bahrain as an important component of the company's regional expansion strategy.

“Bahrain is an important part of M42’s regional growth strategy and our ambition to expand access to world-class healthcare,” Moulavasilis said.

The company expects the facility to employ approximately 200 people, with particular emphasis on recruiting and developing Bahraini healthcare professionals. The project is intended to expand local expertise in specialised medical disciplines while introducing additional clinical capacity.

Strategic investment in Bahrain Bay

The new facility will be established in Bahrain Bay, a major waterfront development in the capital's business district.

The agreement with the Future Generations Reserve Fund, established under Bahrain's Ministry of Finance and National Economy, secures space within the Future Generations Reserve Tower. The arrangement connects healthcare investment with the government's broader efforts to diversify economic activity and attract high-value services.

Sheikh Fahad bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Chairman of Mubadala Health Bahrain, described the project as an addition to the country's healthcare infrastructure, bringing specialised medical services together within an integrated facility.

The development also strengthens M42's presence in Bahrain through cooperation with HealthVision. By combining international clinical expertise with local operating capabilities, the partners aim to expand access to specialist care without requiring patients to seek certain services abroad.

Financial details of the investment have not been disclosed. M42 has also not announced a construction timetable, opening date or planned inpatient bed capacity.

Regional healthcare investment and patient mobility

The expansion illustrates a broader development in Gulf healthcare markets, where international hospital groups and investment partners are establishing specialised medical services across national borders.

Such investments can influence regional patient mobility by increasing the availability of advanced treatments closer to patients' home countries. They may also create opportunities for future cross-border referrals, particularly in medical disciplines requiring specialised expertise.

For Bahrain, the planned facility could strengthen the country's position within the Gulf healthcare sector by expanding access to specialist treatment and introducing additional diagnostic and technology-based services.

However, the project's contribution to international medical tourism remains a potential longer-term development rather than a confirmed objective. M42 has not announced partnerships with medical travel facilitators, international patient programmes or specific initiatives targeting patients from neighbouring countries.

The immediate significance of Mubadala Health Bahrain lies in the expansion of specialist healthcare capacity and the strengthening of investment ties between Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates.

As Gulf countries continue to develop their healthcare infrastructure, projects of this kind demonstrate how cross-border investment and clinical partnerships are reshaping regional medical service networks. Whether the new facility eventually becomes an established destination for international patients will depend on its clinical capabilities, accessibility and future patient service strategy.
