Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi has introduced the Middle East’s first robotically assisted bronchoscopy platform, allowing doctors to biopsy small lung nodules that can be difficult to reach with conventional procedures
Small nodules deep inside the lungs can represent some of the earliest visible signs of lung cancer, but their location and size can make obtaining tissue samples difficult. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is now using a robotically assisted bronchoscopy system designed to navigate deep into the lungs and reach such lesions without open surgery.
The MONARCH platform combines a flexible endoscope with robotic assistance, giving physicians greater stability and precision while navigating the branching airways. Once a suspicious nodule has been reached, doctors can target it in real time and collect tissue for laboratory examination.
Biopsies without open surgery
The minimally invasive procedure is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes between 30 and 75 minutes. By allowing doctors to reach small and difficult-to-access nodules through the airways, the technology can reduce the need for more invasive diagnostic procedures.
Earlier and more accurate tissue diagnosis is particularly important when lung cancer is suspected because treatment options and prognosis depend heavily on the stage at which the disease is detected.
“Robotically-assisted bronchoscopy represents a breakthrough in how we detect and diagnose lung disease,” said Dr. Zaid Zoumot, Division Chair of Pulmonary Medicine at Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi. “For the first time, we can precisely access and biopsy even the smallest, most difficult-to-reach lung nodules, enabling diagnosis at earlier stages where lung cancer is most treatable, and outcomes are better.”
Early detection can make a decisive difference
According to Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, the technology can support the diagnosis of Stage 1 lung cancer, where the five-year survival rate exceeds 70 percent. Its applications, however, extend beyond primary lung cancer.
Doctors can also use robotic bronchoscopy to investigate nodules caused by cancers that have spread to the lungs, as well as benign lesions. Other potential diagnoses include infections such as tuberculosis and inflammatory lung diseases.
The introduction of the system is supported by the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi as part of the emirate’s wider effort to expand early detection and preventive medicine through advanced medical technology.
Greater precision deep inside the lungs
Traditional bronchoscopy can face limitations when lesions are very small or situated in the outer reaches of the lungs. The robotic platform is designed to improve control of the endoscope as it travels through increasingly narrow and complex airways.
For patients, the objective is a faster and more precise diagnosis with less invasive intervention. The tissue obtained during the procedure can then provide the information physicians need to determine whether treatment is necessary and which strategy is appropriate.

Future applications could extend to treatment
The technology may eventually have uses beyond diagnosis. Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi says robotic systems could in future assist with interventions in which detected cancerous nodules are treated directly.
Possible approaches include ablation techniques using heat or cold, potentially allowing physicians to combine highly precise navigation with localized treatment of suspicious tissue.
For now, the principal advance lies in reaching areas of the lung that have traditionally been challenging to biopsy. By bringing robotic bronchoscopy into clinical practice, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi is expanding the options for detecting lung disease at stages when timely diagnosis can have the greatest impact on subsequent treatment.
