Malaysia’s Selangor targets Indonesian medical tourists

Heal & Explore initiative brings hospitals, hospitality providers and transport services together to attract patients from Indonesia

Malaysia’s Selangor state is stepping up efforts to attract international medical travellers, with Indonesia emerging as a key target market. At the Malaysia Healthcare Expo (MHX) Indonesia 2026, held in Jakarta from 15 to 18 October, Tourism Selangor presented its Heal & Explore initiative, which connects medical services with accommodation, transportation and tourism experiences.

The campaign aims to strengthen Selangor’s position within Southeast Asia’s competitive medical tourism market. Located around Kuala Lumpur, the state benefits from access to major international airports and an established network of private hospitals offering specialised medical treatment. Its proximity to Malaysia’s capital also provides international patients with a broad choice of hotels and supporting services.

Nine hospitals and healthcare providers participated in the Jakarta exhibition, highlighting medical services ranging from preventive health screenings to complex specialist treatments. Their involvement reflects Selangor’s strategy of promoting its healthcare infrastructure collectively rather than marketing individual medical facilities in isolation.

Specialist hospitals strengthen regional appeal

Participating institutions included Sunway Medical Centre, Subang Jaya Medical Centre, Thomson Hospital Kota Damansara, KPJ Damansara Specialist Hospital, Avisena Specialist Hospital, Ara Damansara Medical Centre, Columbia Asia Hospitals, KPJ Klang Specialist Hospital and Selgate Healthcare.

Together, these providers represent a broad spectrum of medical disciplines, including cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, gastroenterology and reproductive medicine. Fertility treatments, including in vitro fertilisation (IVF), form part of the services promoted to prospective international patients.

Selgate Healthcare contributes an additional dimension through its wider healthcare network across Selangor, supporting the initiative’s emphasis on access to medical services throughout the state.

For Indonesian patients, geographical proximity and transport connectivity are important elements of Selangor’s proposition. International flights to Kuala Lumpur International Airport, its Terminal 2 and Subang Airport provide access to the region, while road connections link the airports with major medical centres.

The Jakarta exhibition, organised by the Malaysia Healthcare Travel Council (MHTC), offered Tourism Selangor and participating healthcare providers an opportunity to engage directly with the Indonesian market. The event also served as a platform to introduce the MedTravel Selangor: Heal & Explore publication, presenting the state’s medical tourism infrastructure and supporting travel services.

Connecting healthcare with travel services

Beyond hospital treatment, the initiative seeks to address the practical requirements of patients travelling abroad for medical care. Tourism Selangor is working with hospitality and mobility partners, including Le Méridien Petaling Jaya and AirAsia Ride, to promote accommodation and transport options alongside healthcare services.

Such cooperation is relevant to patients who require convenient transfers between airports, hotels and medical facilities, particularly when travelling with accompanying family members or planning extended stays.

The tourism component also includes cultural attractions, nature destinations and wellness experiences across Selangor. Locations such as Kuala Selangor, Sekinchan and Kuala Kubu Bharu are among the destinations promoted to visitors interested in exploring the region beyond its urban centres.

However, the suitability of leisure activities for medical travellers depends on the nature of their treatment, recovery requirements and medical advice. The integration of tourism into healthcare journeys therefore requires appropriate consideration of individual patient circumstances.

For Selangor, the initiative represents a coordinated approach to international patient acquisition, combining healthcare providers with destination marketing and travel infrastructure. Indonesia remains the immediate focus of the promotional campaign, while the participating institutions and supporting services provide a framework that could also appeal to patients from other international markets.

Tourism Selangor has not disclosed specific patient arrival targets, investment figures or projected economic benefits associated with the initiative. Its participation in the Jakarta exhibition nevertheless demonstrates a continued effort to position Selangor within Malaysia’s wider medical tourism sector and strengthen commercial links with the Indonesian healthcare travel market.
